Assoc. Prof. Ibrahim Mike Okumu
It is my singular honour to welcome you to Makerere University School of Economics (MakSOE), a Centre of Excellence for Economics teaching and research.
Economics is a diverse and exciting discipline that addresses various social issues within our country and globally. As MakSOE we pride ourselves in having academic staff trained from world-renowned universities and are engaged in frontier knowledge generation across eight research clusters that are Environment for Development, Labour and Public Economics, Economic Development, Macroeconomic analysis, Health Policy Analysis and Planning, Private Sector, Big Data Analytics and Decision Science & field experiments clusters.
Our core mandate prioritizes one on one engagement between academic staff and students. This intentional tutelage has enabled our graduates to appreciate the role that economics plays in understanding and analyzing phenomena, thus substantively contributing to a better world. Our School is a primary breeding ground for economics professionals nationally, regionally and internationally. This training and exposure we believe, is our small contribution to the shaping of the global development agenda. Indeed, our graduates continue to take on major roles in national, regional, continental and global policy, research and academic institutions, notably the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, African Development Bank, United Nations, Central Banks, Central Planning Authorities, Ministries of Finance and other Ministries and Departments of Government, the Private Sector, Commercial banks, and Local Government Planning Units. One notable alumnus is former Kenyan President, H.E. Emilio Mwai Kibaki (RIP) who graduated with a B.A. Economics, First Class Hons. Degree in 1955. Hence the MakSOE alumni are active players in the policy-making arena both nationally, regionally and internationally.
The MakSOE provides an environment in which study is in-depth, coupled with students’ full involvement in all aspects of university life. Furthermore, not only do they become MakSOE students but upon completion, they become MakSOE alumni, thus beginning what in our experience, is a life-long association with the School.
We strive to ensure that student’s time at MakSOE is both enjoyable and rewarding, providing them with knowledge and experience that will prove hugely beneficial in their future academic, personal, and professional careers.
Once again you are welcome to study, conduct research and any other collaboration with the MakSOE and it is a great honour to serve as your Dean.
Graduates from the School of Economics are among the most competitive business professionals on the market, prepared for leadership roles in Economic Theory, Banking, Economic Policy, Economic Analysis and Management.
